A local companion who knows and shows sights enhances every city trip. There are special smartphone apps for this: They include a ready-made selection of city tours along with the associated maps and provide background information on museums, monuments, parks and buildings. GPS and navigation functions help with orientation, and you can often even have interesting facts read out to you.
In order to make your search for such a companion easier, we have pre-sorted and tried out a few for you. In the article, we introduce you to two German-language city guide apps with very different focuses and capabilities: “SmartGuide” and “Lauschtour”. We also took a look at the “Marco Polo Adventure Tours” app: designed as a mobile supplement to the classic travel guide, it can also be used as a particularly slim standalone guide, depending on personal requirements.
What all three applications have in common is that they are available for Android and iOS. Apart from optional in-app purchases in SmartGuide, it is free to use. We tested the apps on an Android device with the latest operating system version.
