How to apply for Plan 8 subsidy

Puerto Rican families with low economic resources are eligible to request assistance for housing through the Section 8 Program of the Federal Department of Housing.

This is the Housing Rental Voucher Program, known as Plan 8 or Section 8, with which the citizen will pay only the part of the rent that is not covered by the voucher, the amount of which is calculated according to the family income.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SUBSIDY

  • You can fill out a pre-application that can be downloaded online on the website of the Department of Housing

  • Completed applications will be placed on the waiting list in order of preference, then by date and time received
  • Similarly, you can go to one of the 76 offices of the Public Housing Agencies (PHAs), which administer the vouchers.

Each office handles cases depending on the number of vouchers available, people, and number of programs they handle.

Once the voucher is approved, the person can go to the market and locate their home whose owner must complete the Rental Approval Application. An inspector will then review the property to make sure it meets federal safety and sanitation standards.

The contract between landlord and tenant is renewed annually.
