So while Snow is already known as an old man from the original films, Lucy Gray Baird is still an unknown. In conversation with Variety However, filmmaker Francis Lawrence (he directed all of the Panem films except for the very first part) and producer Nina Jacobson had some things to say about the new character:

“She’s a very different character to Katniss. She seeks the limelight. Katniss is the opposite. She’s a woman who loves and lives to perform. Seeing the connection, the story she represents and the thought that Katniss Everdeen grew up knowing about Lucy Gray and that momentwas just a great microcosm of how much uncharted territory we’ve broken and how rooted it is in what we’ve seen before, but in this backward-looking way,” Jacobson said.

Part of this quote in particular arouses curiosity. So was Lucy a kind of role model for Katniss? Lawrence is even more specific: “I thought it would be really interesting if we made a story out of it, so maybe she didn’t come up with the rebellion on her own. Maybe she heard about a girl a long time ago who did the same thing has.”

“The Panem Tributes: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” is scheduled to start in German cinemas on November 16, 2023.
