Hunter Biden would plead guilty to two federal tax offenses

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department on Tuesday charged Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, with non-payment of federal taxes and illegal possession of weapons and has reached an agreement with that government office, according to a letter filed with a court. district in Delaware.

The Trump-appointed federal prosecutor for Delaware reached a plea deal with Hunter Biden.

As part of the agreement made public this Tuesday, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to lesser tax charges.

It’s a bit unusual to settle a federal criminal case at the same time charges are filed in court, although it’s not entirely unheard of.

The president’s son also faces a separate weapons possession charge that will likely be dismissed if he meets certain conditions, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

Two familiar sources told NBC News that the agreement includes a provision in which the United States Attorney agreed to recommend Biden’s probation for his tax violations. Legal experts also said the tax and gun charges likely won’t result in any jail time for President Joe Biden’s son.

The decision by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was nominated by President Trump in 2018, signaled the end of a sweeping, five-year investigation by federal prosecutors, FBI agents and IRS officials into Hunter Biden’s conduct. The Biden administration has kept Weiss in his shoes to prevent a presidentially appointed federal prosecutor from overseeing his son’s criminal case.

Chris Clark, an attorney for Hunter Biden, told NBC News in a statement: “With the announcement of two settlements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the investigation five years in Hunter is resolved.
