It was announced last year and now new details are finally arriving on the sequel to I Am Legend, a 2007 survival movie starring Will Smith, which turned out to be a box-office hit: over $580 million grossed worldwide. Akiva Goldsman, screenwriter of the first film, took care of providing the updates on the new chapter to the microphones of Deadlines.

The sequel will start a few decades after the first. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us where we see what the world would be like after the apocalypse in a 20/30 year time jump. The film will start from the alternative ending of I am legend compared to the one shown in the cinema. We hark back to Matheson’s original novel and will be more faithful to the work. Matheson spoke of how man’s time on Earth as the dominant species had come to an end. This is a very interesting aspect that we will explore in the new film.
In the sequel to I’m legend Will Smith will be joined by Michael B. Jordan, but no details about his character are known yet. It will be the first time that the two will work together in a film. In the ending shown in the cinema, Will Smith’s character sacrifices himself to save humanity, blowing himself up together with the infected. In the alternative one, however, present in the extra contents of the Home Video version, he survives and leaves New York.
Based on Richard Mateson’s novel of the same name (our review here), I’m legend is set in a 2012 New York where a mysterious virus has killed almost all men and turned them into vampires. The only human who survived the contagion is Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith), desperately struggling to find a cure. This is the third remake of the novel published in 1954. There was talk of a sequel to I’m legend already in 2008, but the doors closed permanently in 2014. It then seemed that Warner wanted to proceed with a reboot, then abandoning the plans altogether. Even today, over 10 years later, the film is still the subject of discussion among fans.
