“I was prepared to die”: a mob attacks Howard University students

At least one student was stabbed and several others were injured during a violent fight outside two Howard University residence halls Monday morning.

“I was prepared to die,” said one victim. “When I was on the ground and they were kicking me, at one point I stopped feeling the pain.”

The victims described the attackers as “a bit of DC locals.”

“It was maybe 5, 10, 20,” said one victim. “One of them jumped on me, so I prepared to fight.”

“They started kicking and punching us,” said another victim. “They were robbing us.”

Those two students escaped, but some of their friends stayed behind, and one was stabbed.

“He was stabbed in the back and beaten by about 30 people, all by himself, and security saw him on the ground, saw his body fall limp, and just walked away. They did not call anyone; They did nothing”.

The condition of the stabbed student is unknown.

The university’s police chief said at least one juvenile suspect was arrested with a firearm.

The chief announced a series of actions in response to the attack, including internal and external investigations. A campus police lieutenant was suspended during an internal investigation. He was removed from campus to a third-party security contractor.

The university announced that it plans to install more than 1,000 cameras. He also reported that he will implement security routes so students know which way to go to make sure a security officer is within 100 feet.
