ANDThis year’s short film festival has 79 films from 29 countries competing for three Danzante awards (Ibero-American, international and documentary).

‘Ice Merchants’ and ‘Raticida’ are on the list of films selected for the Danzante Ibero-American Prize competition, which includes 31 short films, including two from Brazil – ‘As Miçangas’, by Rafaela Camelo and Emanuel Lavor, and ‘Madrugada’, by Gianluca Cozza.

“After years in which the sector suffered the crisis generated by the pandemic, the recovery of audiovisual production can be seen in both quantity and quality. The Ibero-American section stands out in particular”, said festival director Estela Rasal, quoted in a statement.

The Huesca International Film Festival distributes more than 24,000 euros in prizes and, emphasizes the organization in the same statement, the winners of the three competitions enter “directly in the pre-selection” of the Oscars, the awards given by the north cinema academy -American.

One of the films representing Portugal at the 51st edition of the Huesca International Film Festival, ‘Ice Merchants’, has already been nominated for the Oscars this year, in the category of Best Animated Short Film.

The short film by João Gonzalez has won many awards in the context of festivals, close to two dozen, including the Annie for Best Short Film – the Annie awards are considered the ‘Oscars of animation’ – and the public award, at the same category, at the Anima International Animation Film Festival, in Brussels.

More recently, last month, the ‘short film’ won five awards at the 22nd Monstra – Lisbon Animation Festival, including Best Short Film, SPA | Vasco Granja and Audience Award.

‘Ice Merchants’ had its world premiere in 2022 at the Cannes Critics’ Week, in France, where it was also awarded, and is co-produced by the Portuguese Cola Animation with the United Kingdom and France.

As for ‘Raticida’, by João Niza Ribeiro, last year it received the Grand Prix of the International Competition at the Cork film festival, in Ireland.

The film has also been selected for competitions at this year’s Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival (Colombia) and Curtas Vila do Conde 2022.
