In Mexico there are a lot of treasures to discover, such as Ichkabal, a Mayan city discovered at the end of the 20th century and that exploration only began at the beginning of the 21st century, although… it stopped until the INAH decided to resume work.

All in the context of the construction of the Mayan Train and thanks to the fact that a reporter reminded the AMLO government that the preservation of Ichkabal was still pending, Mayan city located in the municipality of Bacalar, in Quintana Roo.

The INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) tells us that This Mayan city reached an extension of up to 60 square kilometersconnecting with Dzibanché.

Yes, Dzibanché… if you don’t know her, she is another of the most representative archaeological sites of Quintana Roo. And that —almost like Ichkabal— it developed in the year 200 BC as an agricultural village in its beginnings.

“Between basses”

The truth is that, up to now, the INAH has little data on the development of Ichkabal, largely because It is a young or good archaeological zone, that not much has been discovered —if we compare it with other areas.

And, furthermore, because the governments that have passed decided to pause their exploration until now, that the INAH took them back and plans to open it up to tourism.

When? According to the plans of the Institute, Ichkabal is likely to open its doors to the rest of Mexico in August 2024.

Because, as you can imagine, INAH personnel continue to investigate and explore this ancient city, whose name refers to the land on which it was built and which was susceptible to flooding in the rainy season.

What do we know about Ichkabal?

To warm up engines we pass you some good data that the INAH has obtained from Ichkabal, located 40 meters from the Bacalar lagoon:

This beautiful Mayan city dates back 2,400 years and had its greatest splendor between the 3rd and 7th centuries of our era (AD).

Ichkabal was a center of power that united the regions of the Chiapas and Campechana Mayan jungle with the Guatemalan Petén and with the East of the Yucatan Peninsula until the 10th century, when the classic period of the Mayan civilization ended.
