Microsoft has started releasing the new iOS app “Link to Windows”. This means that the first data/functions can now be exchanged between Windows 11 and the iPhone. The app is still limited, but this is the start of a better collaboration.

So far, the cooperation between a Windows desktop and a smartphone was limited: If you didn’t have an Android phone, you could use Microsoft’s companion apps Smartphone-Link and Link to Windows not use.

There were even some exclusive options only for Samsung Galaxy users. That’s changing now, because Microsoft is out of the beta phase for the Link to Windows app for the iPhone and is thus offering all Apple users a closer connection to the PC.

Microsoft announced the beta in February and invited the first testers (we reported). Now the Windows team has progressed so far with the development that the release has taken place via Apple’s App Store and the Microsoft Store. If you want to try it out, download the Link to Windows app for the iPhone and the Smartphone Link app for the PC. Both apps are free.

iOS Messages on PC

However, many limitations remain for iPhone users. To start the app, iMessages (messages) can be written and sent on the PC, or received and read. That’s it. But there are also some confusing features of the app. Anyone who uses iMessage on Windows will see all messages in grey. There is currently no way to sync the entire message history, so only messages sent or received via Phone Link are displayed. Also, you can’t send pictures or videos in messages, and you can’t use group calls.

Phone Link for iOS runs on iOS 14 or higher and is not compatible with iPad. Windows 11 is required for this and Bluetooth must be activated on the devices to be connected.
