Most recently, sporting director Roland Virkus counted Julian Weigl among the leading players at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the coming season. It has long been clear that the ball distributor, loaned from Benfica Lisbon, should remain with the foals beyond the summer. Now Virkus and Co. are celebrating their breakthrough.
As the Gladbachers report, a full agreement has been reached with Weigl’s Portuguese employer. The ex-Dortmunder signs a contract until the summer of 2028. “Julian is an important building block for our team in terms of his footballing class, but also in terms of his personality”Virkus praises his midfielder.
Weigl had a fixed purchase option in his loan agreement, which provides for a payment of 15 million euros. Assuming that the fee will now be lower – otherwise renegotiation would have been largely obsolete. In any case, it is certain that the 27-year-old will play for Gladbach in the Bundesliga again next season.
