According to a media report, around 20 classified documents from previous periods in government have been found in the private rooms of US President Joe Biden.

The US television broadcaster CBS reported on Friday evening (local time), citing a law enforcement officer, that among the approximately ten government documents found in Biden’s private offices in the capital Washington was material of the highest level of secrecy.

Fewer than 10 classified government documents were discovered in the garage of Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. However, there was no top-secret material there.

These are documents from Biden’s time as US Vice President. The Democrat had been deputy to then-President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. In the past few days it has become known that classified information from this period has been found at both locations.

The first tranche had already been discovered on November 2 – shortly before the important congressional elections in the USA. The White House emphasized that Biden’s lawyers immediately informed the National Archives, which is responsible for storing such documents. However, the public only found out about it when the media, including CBS, reported on the delicate find.

As a reaction to the first discovery when clearing out the private offices in Washington, employees of the US President are said to have searched for further documents and finally found them in his house, explained Biden’s special adviser Richard Sauber.

The discovery of the second tranche, which according to the Ministry of Justice was already discovered on December 20, was publicly disclosed by the White House only a few days ago – again in response to media reports. The president and the government headquarters are therefore heavily criticized. (dpa)
