The exhibition called “J’adoOre! J’adoOre!” welcomes the last works of the artist. Sculptures where nature predominates.

In the Great East, Patrick Hervelin is best known for his monumental creations scattered across the region. In Commercy, its three XXL blue cows, installed on a roundabout since 1999, are part of the local heritage. Today, the country’s artist takes up residence in ceramics and ivory museumuntil October 29, 2023.

Nature as inspiration

Patrick Hervelin loves nature. And his work is a perfect illustration of this. The work of the sculptor is often visited by the mineral, the animal or the vegetable. “A garlic, an orange, it’s architecture. The plant, it will find a way to rise in space, a structure, an architecture conforming to the wind, the sun, the shade” explains the artist.

At the museum of ceramics and ivory in Commercy, Patrick Hervelin exhibits recent pieces such as these soup plates broken by the cold. “I put them in water and freeze the water. It’s the ice that breaks them. Generally, it makes nice breaks” he says. Water, source of life and so precious, is also present with these fountain models composed of a leaning column. “It evokes the fact that the stream of water will be vertical while the column is all at an angle. We read the world, the planet, the element in which we walk”explains Patrick Hervelin.

A sculpture on Bill Clinton’s desk

Visitors will also meet the pilgrim surveyors of the arid lands. Wacky, whimsical or serious bronze statuettes that present a multitude of facets.

The artist, who was born in 1948, has been sculpting since the early 1980s. A man from the countryside, he lives in a small rural town in the Meuse, of 400 souls, where he is called “the artist”. But his works are known well beyond the borders of the Grand Est region. He performed as far away as Quebec on the Rimouski ice floe (2012) and one of his sculptures, a rhinoceros, adorned the office of former United States President Bill Clinton.

Exhibition “J’adoOre! J’adoOre!”, museum of ceramics and ivory, 7 avenue Carcano in Commercy (Meuse). Until October 29, 2023.
