Given the cut suffered by the Chamber of Deputies to the budget originally requested for this 2023, the National Electoral Institute (INE) will seek to apply measures of “budgetary rationality and discipline” with the aim of saving more than 200 million pesos.

Last Friday, January 20, in ordinary session, the electoral body reported that the Executive General Board unanimously approved budgetary measures that will allow the Institute to generate savings of 223.3 million pesosin order to have resources to organize the extraordinary election of a Tamaulipas senator and “cover the budgetary insufficiency.”

In his participation, the President of the INE, Lorenzo Cordova Vianello explained that the General Council mandated the Executive General Board to define, based on rationality measures and savings goals, an amount that would allow it to correct the deficit, product of the cut of 4 thousand 475 million pesos that the lower house applied to the budget originally requested by the Institute for the year 2023.

And it is that according to the official, the difference between the budget requested by the INE and what was approved in San Lázaro implied a deficit of 537 million pesos, a figure that was adjusted by the General Council canceling a series of projects, such as the construction of two buildings for the Local Boards of Querétaro and Colimafor an amount of 314 million pesos.

“Derived from all these adjustments, cancellation of projects, etc., it is requested that it be corrected, covered with the savings goal”

For this reason, Córdova Vianello recalled that in the session held on December 14 last year, the INE General Council established a savings goal of 223.3 million pesos.

Meanwhile, the executive secretary of the electoral body, Edmund Jacobo Molinaspecified that the set of savings measures will be submitted to the General Council of the INE for discussion and, where appropriate, approval.

Likewise, the official considered that the National Electoral Institute You must be careful in your savings goalsso as not to jeopardize the activities:

“At this moment I see it difficult for us to be in a position to have a visualization in this regard and, above all, because next September the 2023-2024 electoral process will begin and with the inflation rates that have run in recent years and forecast for this one, I would say that one should be very careful with the savings goals to be able to meet them in the first instance and, above all, to to be able to comply with the obligations of this institution in the organization of elections”, founded the secretary.

After the approval of plan B of the electoral initiative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), Lorenzo Córdova warned that the reform of six legal systems not only it is unconstitutionalbut rather “erodes five great democratic pillars” that put at risk the operational capacity of the INE in the organization of free elections and, therefore, “political stability and democratic governance.”

On January 11, during his participation in the seminar “The states in 2022, the new partisan distribution”, the president counselor stressed that the legal changes annul the constitutional guarantees that until now have allowed free and authentic elections, governed by the principles of “independence, autonomy, certainty, legality, maximum publicity and objectivityand for the first time in 30 years it puts at risk that the citizen vote is exercised in freedom”.
