The influencer and youtuber Santiago Maratea (4 million followers on Instagram) is the protagonist of one of the strangest events in current Argentine soccer: He organized a collection among the fans to save his club (Independiente) from bankruptcy.

seeks to raise 21 million dollars.

In the first hour of the collection for the trust, the influencer raised 200 million Argentine pesos (about 925 thousand dollars).

The number was announced by the youtuber in the middle of the press conference that he was offering to explain the collection mechanism that focuses on donations from the club’s fans, money that will be placed in a trust managed by the organizer.

Hours later, at midnight on Thursday, April 27, Maratea said that 400 million pesos had already been raised, almost two million dollars.

The influencer strategyin which the directors of the Argentine club do not participate, was supported by some former players of the institution, such as Miguel Ángel “Pepe” Santoro, who was also present at the conference.

Collections that became famous

Over the years, Latin America has witnessed some of the largest fundraising campaigns in the world aimed at raising funds for various purposes. From saving institutions from bankruptcy (as is the case of Maratea with Independiente) to financing charity programs.

One of the most outstanding collection campaigns in history was “Teleton”, which began in Chile in 1978.

Telethon is an annual televised event that raises funds for children with disabilities. Over the years, the campaign has spread to other Latin American countries, including Mexico, where it became a huge success.

In 2022, the Mexican Teletón raised 410.4 million pesos (well above the 387 million it had as a goal), making it one of the most successful charity campaigns in the region.

Another famous collection campaign was “Un techo para mi país”, which also started in Chile (1997). The campaign aimed to provide shelter to those living in extreme poverty and quickly gained popularity in Latin America.

Until 2021, the organization has built more than 145,000 homes in 19 countries.

Objective of the influencer’s collection to save Independiente

“Transparency is in the DNA of my collections,” said the youtuber who has become famous in Argentina for organizing other collections to help different people in the country.

“We need 2,100,000 fans to put up 4,000 pesos each,” said Maratea. “With that amount, the 21 million dollars that the club owes would be settled,” added the influencer on his social networks, launching the trust.
