Mexico City.- A month and a half after the tragedy, the National Institute of Migration (INM) decided to temporarily suspend provisional immigration stays.

These are 33 rooms classified as type “A” and “B”, which have a total accommodation capacity for 1,306 migrants.

In a statement, the INM indicated that the closure of these stays will be in force until the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) concludes the supervision visit to all the facilities.

He pointed out that the suspension will also apply until the CNDH renders the special report on the situation of immigration stations, migration flows in the country and its problems.

The INM detailed that there are 14 type “A” provisional stays and 19 type “B” Provisional Stays. The first allow a maximum stay of 48 hours, and the second up to seven days.

“The attention that was provided in the provisional stays will continue in the other immigration offices distributed in Mexico,” clarified the body of the Ministry of the Interior.

The Migration Regulation establishes that provisional stays are physical facilities that the INM enables to house foreigners who do not prove their regular immigration status.

According to official information, there are provisional stays type “A” in the States of Campeche, Chiapas, Coahuila, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala and Yucatán.

Type “B” is available in Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja Southern California, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, Sinaloa and Veracruz.

On April 21, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Alejandro Encinas, reported that a “total” review of the INM facilities is being carried out.

“There is a total review, not only the protocols, but the whole of the Institute, the changes will be announced soon,” said Encinas.

“It is necessary to strengthen attention, dignified treatment, respect for the rights and conditions for migrants; even, so that they integrate into national life,” he added.
