Instagram and other social networks are currently being criticized in the USA for the posts that they particularly recommend to young people. It’s no secret that Instagram itself has even determined in internal studies that it has a negative influence on female teenagers. I assume that one of the latest innovations is intended to counteract this a little. This should give you a little more control over what the algorithm suggests to you.
Instagram specifically mentions new ways to manage recommended posts. Accordingly, you can select content that is suggested to you so that you no longer see such and similar examples in the Explore area – see also the article image. Multiple content can also be hidden at the same time. According to its own statements, Instagram then tries to publish similar content in other places that make recommendations, e.g. B. in the reels or in the search field, no longer to be displayed.
Of course, this is relatively non-transparent and you have to test how well it works in practice. Furthermore: In addition to comments and DMs, recommended posts that use certain words, emojis or hashtags in the caption can now also be hidden.
This is then joined, unfortunately only in English-speaking markets, by Quiet Mode. If a profile is in Quiet Mode, it will no longer receive any notifications. The activity status shows the idle mode and DMs are answered with an automatic reply. The times for the Quiet Mode can be adjusted individually. Under 18s are asked to activate it if they actively use the app during the evening hours.
Now, parents and guardians can also see their teens’ Instagram settings, including privacy and account settings. Whenever a teen updates a setting, the parent or guardian receives a notification so they can discuss the change. Also, they can see which accounts their teen has blocked.
