Most of us spend a considerable amount of time on social media, with Instagram topping the list among young people. The new app update aims to limit their use to regain control. Is it successful?

A Silence mode that informs his friends

If TikTok is the fastest growing social network, Instagram remains the one with the largest share of users visiting it daily. And as Facebook sees its age range climb, the photo and video sharing application continues to appeal to young people. But whether you’re a toddler or an old veteran, it’s never good to spend hours scrolling every day.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has just published an article revealing the few new features of the next update, starting with the “Quiet Mode”, probably called “Mode Silencieux” in French. “But, come on, this mode already exists!”, are you going to tell me, and you’re not totally wrong.

If you go to the settings and go to Notifications, it is already possible to pause all notifications for a period ranging from 15 minutes to 8 hours. The new Silent Mode adds a small moon symbol on his profile to indicate to his followers that this status is activated. This indication is present in the conversation, on the stories icon, and on the profile. If this mode is activated and you receive a message, an alert notifies your interlocutor that you have not received a notification.

Meta clarifies that teenagers will receive recommendations when they use Instagram too much late at night, offering them to limit their use. The problem with these options is that they are based only on the will of young people, unlike the other novelty, which concerns parental control.

Improved parental controls

It is already possible on Instagram to activate a parental controlwhere parents can analyze their children’s use of the application, such as the time they spend on it, or even add blackout slots.

Recently, it is now possible for parents tohave access to their children’s privacy settings, and receive a notification if these are changed. Same thing for accounts that the child has blocked.

Add words to ban

The cornerstone of apps like Instagram or TikTok is their algorithm, which recommends content that is supposed to appeal to us and that adapts to what we watch. However, these contents may not be adequate, and repeatedly highlight unwanted photos or videos.

That is why it will be possible to add words to ban which will no longer be recommended anywhere. If Instagram spots this or these words in hashtags or in the description of a post, it will no longer appear. Small problem of course: it is always possible that unwanted photos or videos will continue to be promoted if the description does not contain any banned words. An addition that has limits, but it is still a step in the right direction.

But when does it happen?

All of these new features are already available to users in the USA, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Meta hopes to develop these functions in other countries very soon.
