Insufficient signatures gathered to remove the mayor of Coral Gables

MIAMI.- The Miami-Dade County Elections Department confirmed that the number of signatures collected to recall the mayor of Coral Gables was insufficient.

According to the document, as of this Tuesday, April 30, the Department of Elections certified 1,533 petitions of the 1,719 presented by the “End the Corruption” committee with the intention of revoking Vince Lago, mayor of Coral Gables, from power.

In order to get the impeachment process underway, it was necessary to gather at least 1,650 signatures in 30 days, or 5% of the 33,000 voters registered in the last elections. To later look for more petitions to include the repeal on the ballot. Something that is not going to happen now.

The recall petitioners argued in their call that Lago, taking advantage of his position as mayor, had benefited financially from doing business with developer Rishi Kapoor, in violation of municipal code.

Lago, as a real estate agent, would have been involved in the sale of land to Kapoor for $35.5 million, located on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, for which he would have obtained a portion of the $640,000 commission generated by the transaction.

The mayor’s defenders claim that Lagos always recused himself from City Commission votes on projects with Kapoor.

“I have been informed that the black money-funded recall campaign against me has not met the required requests. “This is not only a vindication for my family but, more importantly, it is a victory for the residents, who have stood united against the out-of-town developers,” Lago declared through the social platform X.
