The solar roof cycle path pilot project was opened last Thursday in Freiburg im Breisgau. The Badenova company has installed more than 900 solar modules as a roof over the trade fair cycle path on Madisonallee along a 300 meter cycle path.

The project, which is currently unique in Europe, is a cooperation between the city and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), which then wants to use the electricity for its research laboratories. Not only should the devices be operated with renewable energy, but the ISE wants to use the project to collect data in order to advance research into energy generation in urban areas. The city of Freiburg is using the project to get closer to its climate goals of 100 gigawatt hours of green electricity by 2030.

The construction of the solar roof started in November 2022. A galvanized steel construction serves as a support for the PV system. With a maximum output of around 283 kilowatt peak (kWp), the system can generate around 280,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, which corresponds to the annual electricity requirements of more than 180 people.

In order to keep the costs for this and other similar projects affordable, a new carrier system was developed by the Freiburg company clickcon. It should be easy to multiply and adapt to different circumstances. The solar modules come from the Dresden company Solarwatt. The glass-glass laminates with an aluminum frame have general building authority approval from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). This modular system aims to make it easy for imitators to launch similar projects to accelerate the energy transition.
