Microsoft has just announced a new version of its search engine Microsoft Bing, powered by the chatbot ChatGPT. The company also indicates that it has reviewed its browser Microsoft Edgepromising that the two will provide a new experience for browsing the web and finding information online.

It’s a new day for research said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. He argued that the web search paradigm hasn’t changed in decades, but that AI can deliver information more smoothly and quickly than traditional methods.

In demonstrations, the company has shown what it calls the new Bing working in various configurations. One displays traditional search results side-by-side with AI annotations, while the other mode allows users to speak directly to the Bing chatbot, asking it questions in a chat interface like ChatGPT.

Microsoft showed a number of examples of searches: querying Bing for recipes, planning an entire trip to Mexico City, or buying furniture from IKEA. Unlike ChatGPT, the new Bing can also retrieve information about recent events. It’s online today in limited preview. A waiting list has been opened here.

Along with the new Bing, Microsoft has launched two new AI-enhanced features for its Microsoft Edge browser: chat and dial. These will be integrated into Edge’s sidebar. Chat allows users to summarize a web page or document they are viewing and ask questions about its content, while Composer acts as a writing assistant to help generate text, emails, posts on social networks, etc.

In an attempt to anticipate Microsoft’s announcement today, Google yesterday unveiled its own ChatGPT, named Bard. The big question for Microsoft and Google, however, is: how will chatbots fit into existing methods of finding information online, and what if they get it wrong?
