The Police of the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan today sent text messages to 2,111 women to warn them about the obligatory nature of wearing the headscarf after being recorded by video surveillance cameras without wearing it.

Along the same lines, the authorities also ordered the closure of up to 80 commercial establishments that did not comply with these Islamic regulations, the local newspaper Etemad reported.

It should be remembered that the Iranian authorities began a few weeks ago to control the use of the veil, mandatory according to the legislation, using video surveillance cameras based mainly on technology applied to control motor vehicle traffic.

The dress code was broken by several women in protest at the death last September of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish girl, while in police custody, allegedly for wearing the headscarf incorrectly.

In turn, there were large concentrations in the streets of the main cities, which were harshly repressed by the authorities. In fact, up to fifty deaths will be registered.

After these events and in the face of international criticism, the government was slightly permissive regarding the violation of the hijab regulations. However, the main religious authorities and pro-government politicians have now resumed pressure to once again intensify control to enforce strict dress codes affecting women.
