Mexico City.- Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida has died at the age of 95, local media reported Monday.

Last September, the actress underwent surgery for a fractured femur after suffering a fall at her home in Rome. The accident occurred several weeks before the general elections in which Lollobrigida planned to participate as an independent candidate for the Senate for the Sovereign and Popular Italy alliance (ISP), which brings together various left-wing formations such as the Communist Party, Socialist Homeland and Action Civil.

In 1999, she also ran for the European Parliament as a candidate for the now-defunct I Democratici (The Democrats) party. But despite getting 10,000 votes, she was not elected.

The Italian film star, who was born in the province of Rome on July 4, 1927, was known for her roles in the films ‘Fanfan la Tulipe’ and ‘Notre Dame de Paris’. During her career, Lollobrigida worked with Italian directors such as Alberto Lattuada, Vittorio De Sica, Mario Monicelli, Pietro Germi, Alessandro Blasetti, and Mario Soldati.
