The chairman of the German police union, Rainer Wendt, has called for tougher action against climate activists from the Last Generation group nationwide – based on the Bavarian model. “It is no coincidence that the activists chose Berlin and not Munich for their major protest,” Wendt told the editorial network Germany (RND/Wednesday).

In Berlin, where the last generation has been blocking numerous streets this week, the activists have so far been detained for up to 48 hours. “I think that’s far too little,” said Wendt. He pleaded for a nationwide uniform regulation with a possible maximum duration of 30 days preventive detention as in Bavaria. “We will only get the situation under control when the penalties become more severe.”

The preventive detention of climate activists caused a lot of discussion nationwide last year. In most other federal states, the maximum duration of preventive detention is much shorter than in Bavaria. In December, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) called for the federal states to agree on a uniform approach to the use and duration of preventive detention. (dpa)
