News JVTech It’s official, Netflix is no longer number one in streaming, here’s who the new king is

According to a ranking carried out by a specialized firm, the SVOD platform Netflix lost its place as the number 1 service in the United States in 2022. In number of subscribers, Netflix is now overtaken by one of its historical competitors.

The SVOD war is raging around the world : it must be said that with the proliferation of platforms of this type, consumers must make a choice in terms of subscription and this pushes them to favor certain services to the detriment of others. The United States is a “land of subscription” where streaming video has been paid for for years.

Obviously, Netflix is one of the benchmarks in the sector: it is somewhat thanks to this platform that serious things have started. If the American company has existed since 1999, it was concretely in the early 2010s that it launched into streaming.

Netflix now overtaken by Prime Video in the United States

Pioneer of SVOD, Netflix has long been unbeatable. But that was before. Because the independent American agency Parks Associates, which has been following the evolution of subscriptions to SVOD services for several years, now puts Netflix in second place for 2022.

Last year, it therefore appears thatAmazon Prime Video, hitherto eternal second, has indeed passed Netflixrelegated to second place. The third and fourth places are occupied by HULU and Disney+which belong to the same group.

The classification carried out by Parks Associates is confirmed by the JustWatch platform. According to the latter, at the end of 2022, Amazon Prime Video held 21% market share in the USA, compared to 20% for Netflix. A very slim advance, but an advance all the same, sufficient to underline that no service can be dethroned.

Netflix loses its place in the USA, but…

To achieve this ranking, Parks Associates uses a methodology developed over the years, based on indicators that are more or less obvious to identify. Because all SVOD platforms do not communicate openly on their number of subscribers. In 2022, Amazon Prime Video notably claimed to have more than 200 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix, for its part, has about 223 million.

If Netflix has gone down a notch in the American ranking of SVOD platforms, however, the service remains the world leader. It still has a comfortable lead, but this can be explained in particular by the fact that there are more platforms accessible by subscription in the United States than in the rest of the world. If competition continues to increase in Europe with attractive offers, Netflix could find itself in more danger.

With the recent launch of a new cheaper subscription formula, including advertising, Netflix probably has a card to play to attract new subscribers or bring back old ones. All that remains is to wait for the company to communicate on results, probably at the end of the first quarter of 2023.
