It's official: the first heat wave of summer 2023 has arrived

INTERNATIONAL WRITING.- The first heat wave of the summer will arrive on Sunday and will last until Wednesday, June 28, with maximum temperatures that will exceed 40-42 ºC in areas of the southwest quadrant and with minimum temperatures that will also be very high, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) confirmed this Friday.

The area most affected by the heat will be the southern half, especially the Guadiana, Guadalquivir and Tagus valleys, with highs that could exceed 40-42 degrees, and 38ºC may also be reached in much of the rest of the southern half. , central area and Ebro valley, and 35 ºC in areas of the northern plateau.

Over the next few days an anticyclonic situation will dominate with a stable atmosphere in general, favoring strong insolation, to which is added the entry of a very warm air mass from North Africa, “which is causing a progressive increase in temperatures in the peninsula and the Balearic Islands since yesterday”according to a statement from Aemet.

Sultry days and tropical nights

The situation will continue mainly until Monday, reaching values that are clearly higher than normal for this time of year in the southern half of the peninsula and that will continue during the first half of next week.

Due to the strong daytime heating, it is likely that some storms will form in mountain areas of the central zone and eastern half of the peninsula starting on Sunday.

Minimum temperatures will also be very high, with tropical nights and values above 20-22 ºC in large areas.

The high temperatures these days will also extend to the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, but in a more moderate way.

During today and tomorrow, temperatures will increase in a general way and will continue to do so on Sunday except in Galicia and Cantabria where they will drop that day.

Up to 44º in the Guadalquivir Valley

On Monday there will be a drop in temperatures in the northern half, although they will continue to rise in the southern half, with what could be the hottest day in that area; Aemet sources do not rule out that it could reach 44 ºC that day in the Guadalquivir valley.

As of Tuesday the 27th, a slight and progressive drop in temperatures will begin, also in the southern half, although they will still remain very high in that area.

It would be from Thursday when the decrease in values would be somewhat more pronounced, to be at normal levels for the time.

As a result of the sweltering heat of the coming days, Aemet recommends carefully following the indications of the “National Plan for Preventive Actions on the effects of excess temperatures on health” on the web:
