Many of us were surprised, to say the least, when Disney announced during the recently held Star Wars Celebration event that Rey would return in a brand new film that is supposed to take place well after the end of The Rise of Skywalker. The information so far is very sparse, but according to Disney themselves, the story will be about how Rey builds up the Jedi order and restores order in the galaxy. Kathleen Kennedy herself also mentioned in an interview with Yahoo how the project had been under development internally for several years and that it was only now that they felt the time was right to reveal it all.
“We’ve been working on that (film) for a few years and all of that feeds into our overall storytelling. So we’ve just got to a point now where we’ve got a wonderful writer in Steven Knight, he’s come on board and we’re going to see a script probably in the next month and a half that we’ve been working on for quite a while. So we’re getting close.”
Both Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Steven Knight are attached to the project, which gives us some hope either way. The big question is, as always, if the duo is given enough free rein.
