Five people were killed in a shooting Monday at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, police said, adding that the shooter was also dead.

Six other people were taken to hospital after the incident, the agency said.

Previously, the Louisville Police Department had said on Twitter that there was an incident in progress and asked the public to stay away from the area.

“There are multiple casualties,” police tweeted. She added that there is “an active offender” at the scene.

Witnesses who came out of the building told the WHAS-TV station that they heard shots inside the building.

Television images showed numerous police vehicles in the area. WHAS reporters said they saw people being transported from the scene in ambulances.

In a tweet, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced he was on his way to the scene.

“Please pray for all the families affected and for the city of Louisville,” Beshear wrote.

The FBI reported that its agents had also responded to the shooting.

The incident occurred in a building on East Main Street where the Old National Bank is located, not far from Louisville Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.
