Since April 20, Netflix has launched its 8-episode political series, The Diplomat. The public seems to generally appreciate this thriller if we are to believe the first returns, while this original creation is already at the top of the most watched productions in France and in the world. Here are 3 things to know about this fiction.

What is La Diplomate about?

The future of Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) was all mapped out. This professional diplomat had indeed planned to fly to Afghanistan and become the American Ambassador to Afghanistan. A major geopolitical event will however occur and call into question his plans. Here she is, therefore, appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom in the midst of a major international crisis. What shake up these certainties and his private life when his marriage is already threatened.

Among all the influences cited by the press, the series is inspired in particular by House of Cards for the side manipulations and scandals. But we’re also quite close from At the White House. Moreover, the creator of La Diplomate, Debora Cahn worked as a screenwriter on the latter. Finally, others cite Homeland et The Crown for the British and backstage side.

An excellent cast for La Diplomate

In addition to the excellent Keri Russell, we have the pleasure of finding Rufus Sewell who embodies the husband of the diplomat. The latter excels in the series The Man in the High Castle. Completing this distribution with small onions: Michael McKean (Better Call Saul), Ato Essandoh (Altered Carbon), David Gyasi (Sandman), Rory Kinnear (Years and Years), or Celia Imrie (Indian Palace).

The series was created by Debora Cahn who, as we saw above, has a very nice business card. Quoted by the specialized site Tumshe explains as follows: “La Diplomate is a series about transcendence and the torture of long-term relationships. (…) In the world of diplomacy, we are dealing with a lot of rules and protocol behaviors, but underneath it all are people who sweat, who spill coffee on their clothes and who forget the name of their interlocutor. »

The series makes everyone agree

The first feedback from the public is therefore very good, and the original creation is at the top of the most watched programs on Netflix according to the latest readings. The press is in tune with this opinion. For example, La Diplomate is rated 3.7 out of 5 on the site Allocinated. The trend is the same on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with a very positive score of 87%. Finally, the appreciation is similar on Metacritic with 75%.
