Arte is broadcasting this Thursday, February 16 from 8:55 p.m. the first three episodes of the new series The girl from Kyiv. This dark thriller takes us through Croatia but also kyiv in Ukraine to follow a dramatic case linked to the sexual exploitation of teenage girls by criminal gangs from Eastern Europe. This six-part fiction is adapted from a novel, inspired by a true story, by Croatian investigative journalist Drago Hedl. The final three episodes will air on Thursday, February 23.

In The girl from Kyiv, it all starts in Osijek, Croatia, on the banks of the Drava river. An old fisherman sees the lifeless body of a young woman, the first victim of a long list. This homicide thus triggers an investigation led, on the one hand, by the police officers Vladimir ‘Vlado’ Kovac and Vesna Horak, but also by the independent journalist Stribor Kralj, as well as Olga Romanchenko, wife of Ivan Horvatic, an influential Croatian politician. The latter embarks on her own research when she learns that Katia, her 15-year-old niece, has disappeared. Episode after episode, this fiction plunges us into the twists and turns of this dark investigation, from revelation to twist. This dark and gripping plot, served by strong acting performances, also denounces the “silence” (translation of the original Croatian title) weighing on this sexual exploitation of adolescent girls.

The filming of the series The girl from Kyiv has in fact not been impacted by the conflict in Ukraine because it took place, between Ukraine and Croatia, a few months before the start of the war in Ukraine. The series, offered by HBO in the United States, was a clear success. Result, it will have a season 2, which is also being filmed. These new episodes will take place in Serbia but will also tackle the war in Ukraine, which broke out in February 2022.
