On Christmas Day, a man died in the fire of his pleasure boat in Capbreton in the Landes.

A 24-year-old young man was indicted and placed in pre-trial detention on Thursday, following the death of a yachtsman in the fire on his boat in Capbreton (Landes), the Dax prosecution announced in a press release.

On Christmas Day, December 25 in the morning, a fire broke out on a boat moored in the port of this seaside town. Firefighters brought the fire under control before it spread to other boats.

Inside the cabin of the boat, the lifeless body of a man in his fifties was then discovered.

An autopsy carried out within the Forensic Institute of Bordeaux had made it possible to “confirm the criminal hypothesis”, according to the public prosecutor Benoît Fontaine.

Indicted for intentional homicide

As part of the investigation conducted jointly by the Landes gendarmerie and the Pau research section, the hearing of several witnesses and the study of video surveillance images of the port and the town then made it possible to identify the suspicious.

This individual was seen “on board the boat belonging to the deceased during the day and evening of December 24 to 25, 2022” before “leaving the scene (…) in the morning, a few moments before the intervention of the firefighters “, specifies the magistrate.

Originally from Bassussarry (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) and already known to the courts “for acts of theft and minor violence”, he was indicted at the Mont-de-Marsan investigation center on counts of “homicide intentional and destruction of the property of others by dangerous means”.
