LASD officer shot by Fontana police on a golf course

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was injured in a shooting at a golf course in Fontana on Tuesday.

The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department took the lead in the investigation that began with a call about a man who discharged a gun near the golf course.

NBC4’s I-Team confirmed that the man, who was shot by Fontana police, is a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting occurred at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club.

Fontana police say they responded to a call from someone on or around the golf course saying shots had been fired.

According to a neighbor, Myesha Dowe, the agent lives in one of the houses that surround the field.

“It was a policeman who was helping us. Not just doing his job in the neighborhood. But also, just a good neighbor,” Dowe said.

He was at home when he thought he heard fireworks.

She said she then began receiving messages from friends saying they heard gunshots and saw their neighbor armed and visibly distraught.

“They saw him go out and run across the golf course with the gun,” Dowe said.

When police arrived, they found the officer sitting on a path near the putting green. He allegedly raised his weapon towards the officers.

That’s when Officer Daniel Romero says several officers fired their weapons.

“The suspect was beaten. He fell, was treated by SB Fire medics on scene and transported to a local hospital in unknown condition,” Romero said.

Investigators have not released any details about what led up to the shooting or the officer’s state of mind.

The status of the agent is unknown.
