Military service began for Lauri Markkanen on Monday. The NBA star intends to combine the army and basketball this summer. He wants to complete as much of the service as possible before next season.

Basketball star Lauri Markkanen began his military service in Sandhamn in Helsinki on Monday.

The 26-year-old NBA pro seized the opportunity and stepped in after his team, the Utah Jazz, missed the playoffs. Markkanen is trying to serve as much of his military service as possible before next season.

– The idea is to run simultaneously with both the military and basketball this summer, I think it will probably succeed, Lauri Markkanen says to General Sports.

Markkanen serves in the Armed Forces Sports School, where conscripts are assigned sports command days and other training opportunities based on individual training plans.

Big brother cut his hair

Short hair is customary during military service. Lauri Markkanen also moved in with short hair – but not without problems.

– The wife started cutting, but the machine broke down. We had to go to the store to buy a new one, with the hat tightly around our heads, he says.

– Big brother Eero stopped by before he went to play frisbee golf. He cut my hair short and at least now it was approved.

Lauri Markkanen’s older brother, Eero Markkanen, is a soccer player and is playing for the Helsinki team Gnistan i menretta this year.
