Osnabruck. Left party leader Martin Schirdewan has described statements by left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht that she would not set up a new party in the event of a personnel and content-related realignment of the left as “helpless attempts at blackmail”. Schirdewan told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ): “We can see once again what democratic understanding prevails among some. For us, party congresses and not statements in the media decide on a political direction, even if that is for one or the other comrade difficult to accept. It goes without saying that the Left will not respond to such helpless attempts at blackmail.”
Wagenknecht, who has been talking publicly about a possible founding of the party for a long time, explained in an interview with “Welt” that she would stop all considerations of founding a new party immediately, “if the left were to be completely reorganized, with attractive leaders at the top of the party and a reasonable course”.
