Leiji Matsumoto (pseudonym of Akira Matsumoto), the famous Japanese mangaka, illustrator and designer is died in the past week (the February 13th, to be precise). To announce and formalize the news was the Toei Animation, underlining the enormous weight that this author had both in the world of printed paper and in that of animation. Leiji Matsumoto he was 85 years old and, at least according to reports, is died due to acute heart failure. The debut of this author in the world of manga can be traced back to 1953 with Michibachi no Boken, a work he built when he was still in high school. Once outside the school walls, he moved to Tokyo and began to shape his popularity in the industry by adopting the pseudonym Leiji starting in 1965.

His work it shaped the very way we experience science fiction today, with a considerably important creative contribution and a lasting impact. This artist’s vision began to take hold in earnest in the 1970s. Some of his most relevant works have been Space Battleship Yamato (from us Battleship Yamato), Captain Harlockfrom 1977 (later to become one of the most famous anime ever) and Galaxy Express 999always from the same year.

The great value of his work brought Leiji Matsumoto to be awarded, in 2001, with the Medal of honor with purple ribbon (awarded to those who achieve considerable experience in inventions and discoveries in the field of science and technology, or excellent results in the academic, sports, artistic and cultural fields) and in 2010 the Order of the Sacred Treasure (an Imperial Japanese award given to those who have done long and meritorious service in their field). In 2012, however, you received the decoration of from the French government Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters).
