LG is working on a new, smaller 4-9x optical zoom camera module. This module would finally make it possible to no longer have protruding photo blocks on the back of smartphones. It will be unveiled at CES 2023 which will take place in January.

Today, smartphones are equipped with increasingly powerful photo modules such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra which will have a 200 Mpx sensor. In return for these performances, the photo blocks on the back of smartphones are also more and more protruding. This is also the case of the iPhone 14 that we tested against the Google Pixel 7 Pro. LG Innotek, a subsidiary of LG, therefore wants to put an end to the reign of huge photo blocks. To achieve this, the company presented a new, smaller camera module with an optical zoom.

LG no longer makes smartphones, but it still plays such an important role in component manufacturing. This new optical zoom camera module is very promising. Able to oscillate between 4x or 9x optical zoomthe new module will allow smartphones to maintain excellent image quality when zooming while reducing the size of the photo block.

LG will showcase its optical telephoto zoom camera module at CES 2023

LG Innotek will present its innovation in January on the occasion of CES 2023. It will take place from January 5 to 8, 2023. The “ optical telephoto zoom camera module is composed of a sensor that can take photos and videos with an adjustable zoom. Not only will this module reduce the size of photo blocks, but it will also reduce the number of sensors needed on the back of smartphones.

Optical zooms are obviously not new to smartphones. The new Google Pixel 7 itself comes with a 48MP sensor with 5x optical zoom. However, optical zooms capable of magnifying the image between 4x and 9x are usually reserved for traditional cameras. Smartphones typically use optical zoom and digital zoom to magnify the image. The Pixel 7 Pro can magnify the image up to 30 times with its digital zoom. We also had the opportunity to test the excellent camera of the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

LG Innotek also explained in a press release that this new module will let “ more space inside the phone » and will keep the « high image quality of the photo module without the need for digital zoom. Moreover, LG has partnered with Qualcomm to ensure module support with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
