AThe lyrics of the songs ‘Kiss the Girl’ and ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’, from the film ‘The Little Mermaid’, will undergo changes to include consent and avoid offending the most “sensitive” spectators, announced the composer.

The Disney classic, originally released as an animated film in 1989, has been updated to reflect changing mindsets around consent, according to composer Alan Menken, who wrote the original film’s score with Howard Ashman.

“There are some lyrical changes to ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have become very sensitive to the idea that (Prince Eric) would somehow force (Ariel to kiss him),” Menken told Vanity. Fair last week.

In the film, Ariel makes a deal with the witch Ursula to trade her voice for human legs so she can explore the world above water and impress Prince Eric. In the animated film, Ariel must secure “true love’s” kiss within three days, or else she will become a mermaid again and belong to Ursula. The song’s lyrics urge the prince to kiss Ariel before it’s too late.

It is recalled that the new version of the film has been the target of criticism thanks to the choice of a black actress to play Ariel. The first trailer, which showed African-American actress Halle Bailey playing the protagonist, reached a record number of ‘dislikes’ on Youtube.
