“We are in the lead”, claims opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu

The Turkish opposition candidate for the presidency Kemal Kiliçdaroglu claimed to be “in the lead” in the presidential election ahead of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We are in the lead,” he said on Twitter, challenging the figures from the official Anadolu agency which gives 52.5% of the votes to the head of state after the counting of more than 40% of the ballots.

Erdogan leads the presidential election on 25% of ballots counted

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is given the lead in the presidential election on Sunday evening after the counting of 25% of the ballots, according to official media.

The outgoing president, in power for twenty years, obtained 54.3% of the vote at this stage against 39.8% for his opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, according to still very provisional results reported by the state agency Anadolu.

The main opposition candidate Kemal Kiliçdaroglu voted in Ankara.

“We missed democracy,” said the social democrat, all smiles.

“You will see, spring will return to this country, God willing, and it will last forever,” he added, using one of his campaign slogans.

Erdogan votes in Istanbul and says he wishes “a profitable future” for the country and for democracy

Outgoing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wished Sunday “a profitable future” for the country and its democracy after voting in Istanbul.

“It is important that all voters vote without concern to show the strength of Turkish democracy,” added the leader, without predicting his victory.

Erdogan facing Kiliçdaroglu: who are the candidates for the election?

The ballot is polarized between two main candidates: on the one hand the Islamo-conservative President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 69, in power for twenty years, on the other Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, 74, at the head of a social- democrat and secular.

The current head of state remains the champion of the conservative majority, while Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, an economist by training and former senior civil servant, has been the leader of the Republican People’s Party since 2010.

Between these two men, voters will have to choose: one-man rule or a collegial leadership, autocracy or the promised restoration of the rule of law.

A third candidate, Sinan Ogan, is credited with a few points.
