What we know about this ceasefire, decreed by Vladimir Putin

This Thursday, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, asked his soldiers deployed in Ukraine to cease hostilities next January 6 and 7, within the framework of Orthodox Christmas. This is the first major truce since the start of the conflict on February 24.

This decision taken by the Russian president comes after an appeal from the patriarch Kirill, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. This former member of the KGB is one of the pillars of Vladimir Putin’s regime, and has never hidden his support for Moscow’s “special operation” in Ukraine.

“In view of the call of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Russian Defense Minister to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine from 12 p.m. on 6 January of this year until midnight on January 7,” Vladimir Putin said.

Washington and Berlin announce more military aid for Ukraine, including light armor

The United States and Germany will deliver to Ukraine infantry armored vehicles, American Bradley type and German Marder type, taking Western military support to kyiv to a new level in the fight against the invasion Russian.

“The war in Ukraine has reached a turning point,” Joe Biden told a White House meeting on Thursday, adding that “the Russians are not (relaxing) in anything,” before announcing an increase in US support for Ukraine.

Germany, under international pressure to beef up its military assistance to Ukraine, has also pledged to provide a Patriot air defense battery, as the United States has already done.

A ceasefire criticized by the international community

While the ceasefire, decreed by Russia for the Orthodox Christmas, must come into force this Friday noon, the international community has denounced the hypocrisy of Vladimir Putin.

For the American president, Vladimir Putin seeks “to give himself some air”. He “was ready to bomb hospitals, nurseries and churches (…) on December 25 and on New Year’s Eve,” joked Joe Biden.

This ceasefire “will do nothing to advance the prospects for peace”, for his part reacted the British Minister of Foreign Affairs James Cleverly, calling for a permanent withdrawal of Russian forces. Such a truce will bring “neither freedom nor security” in Ukraine, abounded the German diplomacy.

The ceasefire, ordered by Russia, must begin this Friday

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered a ceasefire in Ukraine for the Orthodox Christmas of January 6-7, the first major truce since the invasion began nearly a year ago, lambasted by kyiv who denounces “hypocrisy” and the desire to save time.

For Volodymyr Zelensky, the unilateral ceasefire is, according to him, only an “excuse in order to at least stop the advance of our troops in the Donbass and bring equipment, ammunition, and bring closer men of our positions”.

“What will be the result? No more deaths,” he said.

The truce must take effect from noon this Friday (11 a.m. French time).
