Hugo Lloris is retiring from the French national team. In an interview with ‘L’Equipe’, the Tottenham Hotspur pro announces his retirement: “There comes a time when you have to know that you have to give up the lead. I don’t feel like taking over the matter, I’ve always said and repeated that the French national team doesn’t belong to anyone. We must all ensure that this is the case, me first. I think the team behind it is ready to continue. There is also a goalkeeper in Mike Maignan who is ready.”

After more than 14 years with the Équipe Tricolore, this is the end for the 36-year-old. Lloris has made 145 appearances for France, making the goalkeeper his country’s record capper. His career was crowned with the world championship title in 2018. At the European Championships in 2016 and at the most recent World Cup in Qatar, he was left behind in the finals.
