The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvadecreed this Sunday the federal intervention in Brasilia after the attacks that hundreds of sympathizers of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaroperpetrated against the headquarters of the three public powers, in the capital, and warned that the “terrorists” who staged them “will pay with all the force of the law.”

Lula considered that there is no precedent for an attack against democracy of these characteristics and described the acts perpetrated by Bolsonarismo as “undemocratic” while also announcing that who financed these actions will be investigated.

The Brazilian head of state described the attacks as “barbarism” perpetrated by “Nazi hooligans” and promised that those responsible will be identified and arrested.

“We believe there was a lack of security and I want to tell you that all the people who did this will be found and they will be punished,” he said.

“Democracy requires that people respect the institutions that were created for democracy,” he added.

Regarding the intervention decree, Lula said that it will be for 23 days, until January 31.
