Apple has just unveiled its new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips accompanied by new powerful MacBook Pro and Mac mini models. More powerful and faster than the M1 Pro and M1 Max, these new chips are promising.

As expected, Apple has finally lifted the veil on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro as well as the new Mac mini. MacBook Pros feature the new M2 Pro and M2 Max while the Mac mini is offered with the M2 and M2 Pro chips. The new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips are obviously more powerful and faster than their predecessors, the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

Now, the M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs are Apple’s most powerful in-house chips. They will be dethroned at the exit of the M2 Ultra chip which will arrive later, probably in the next few months. In the meantime, let’s see the new features offered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max.

The M2 Pro chip is 20% faster than the M1 Pro in CPU performance

Engraved in 5 nm, the M2 Pro chip is equipped with 20% more transistors compared to the M1 Pro. It also has twice as many as the standard M2. Apple also claims that CPU performance of M2 Pro is 20% faster than M1 Pro. The M2 Pro has up to 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores with a unified memory that can go up to 32 GB.

Thus, the M2 Pro is dedicated to users and professionals who use demanding software and need high computing power. To give you an idea, Apple said that we should expect 40% performance improvement on Photoshop and 25% on Xcode. We will obviously know more from the first tests of the overpowered chips.

The M2 Max chip offers a considerable gain in graphics power

As with the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs, the main difference between the M2 Pro and the M2 Max is the graphics part. Indeed, the M2 Max chip is capped at 12 CPU cores, but it can go up to 38 GPU cores with a higher capacity L2 processor cache. Thus, the M2 Max offers 30% faster graphics performance than the M1 Max. It is also composed of 10 billion additional transistors compared to the M1 Max.

Apple assures that the M2 Max chip is currently the most powerful and efficient SoC in the world when it comes to business laptops. Therefore, the 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with an M2 Max chip is sold from €4,149.
