As part of the Berlinale 2023, ZDF presented the results of the first survey of the German creative industries. With a positive result: 58 percent of those questioned said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their cooperation with ZDF. Among the producers it is 70 percent. In addition to these, creative people from the acting, directing and screenwriting trades also took part in the study.

The variety of programs, the reach of ZDF in society and the ability to innovate are valued as strengths in the cooperation. ZDF’s reliability as a partner for creative people and the station’s quality standards are also emphasized. There are challenges in terms of the speed of decision-making, the length of the administrative process, the tense financial situation in the industry and the perceived willingness to innovate across the ZDF range.

ZDF program director Dr. Nadine Bilke: “I am very happy about the satisfaction in working with us. At the same time, the study showed us where there is a need for action. We are tackling that, because ZDF wants to be the best possible partner for all creative people in Germany.”

ZDF’s contribution to society plays a special role for the creatives

The study also revealed that future social issues play a special role for creative people. This includes above all the contribution of the public service ZDF to social cohesion. But sustainability, a shortage of skilled workers and the promotion of young talent are also important issues. Securing the independence of the German creative industries is also high on the list of topics that ZDF should address.

The results are an important first step towards a forward-looking, partnership-based exchange between the creative industries and the broadcaster. With him, the cooperation should be improved and strengthened so that ZDF, the largest individual client in the German film and television industry, continues to be the first point of contact for creative people.

The study was carried out by the independent market research institute Mindline Media between September and November 2022 with 420 respondents from the German creative industries. This is the first study of this kind to be carried out in Germany by a video provider. It was created in connection with the “One ZDF for everyone” strategy, with which ZDF intends to ensure that it is sustainable up to 2025 in terms of programming and corporate management.
