Man found shot in head dies after incident with McAllen police

Ronaldo Alvarado, 25, who was found with a gunshot wound to his head, died on Sunday, July 30, and an autopsy was ordered, the McAllen Police Department reported Monday.

The incident occurred following a complaint that a man, who was allegedly intoxicated, was being extremely aggressive and was armed, police report.

Alvarado was hospitalized after being involved in a chase and shootout early Sunday morning with McAllen Police officers. The incident occurred around 3:38 am near 1700 North 23rd Street, the McAllen Police Department said in a statement Sunday.

The man was driving a Dodge Charger when officers made a traffic stop. According to the information provided by the authorities, before the officers got out of their patrol car, Alvarado allegedly started shooting and they responded in the same way.

Then, the suspect, already apparently shot, began to drive slowly south. The vehicle continued its slow southbound drive to a private parking lot and came to a complete stop after hitting a fence approximately four blocks south of the traffic stop location, the statement said.

When officers approached the car, Alvarado was slumped over with an apparent head injury, according to the authorities’ news release. An officer broke the glass on the passenger side of the vehicle to provide emergency medical assistance and saw the suspect’s gun next to the man. The suspect appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the temple.
