The individual, who appeared this Friday before the London Assize Court, admitted having threatened to kill the queen in December 2021.

Jaswant Singh Chail, who entered Windsor on Christmas Day 2021 to murder Elizabeth II with a crossbow, pleaded on Friday guilty to treason under Section 2 of the Treason Act for attempting to “injure or harm Her Majesty“.

The individual, who was appearing at London Assize Court, the Old Bailey Court, admitted threatening to kill the Queen and possessing a loaded gun in the grounds of the Windsor, reports the BBC.

Jaswant Singh Chail is the first figure charged with treason since 1981. This age-old law that was enacted during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1842 convicts people of high treason in the UK.

Interned in psychiatric care

On December 25, 2021, Jaswant Singh Chail appeared outside Windsor Castle and told a police officer: “I am here to kill the Queen”.

The monarch spent Christmas there, her first since the death of her husband Philip, after giving up going as usual for the holidays at her residence in Sandringham. The man was then committed to psychiatric care.

Intrusion attempts of this kind are not exceptional. The most spectacular dates back to 1982, in Buckingham, when Michael Fagan had managed to make his way to the bedroom of the queen, who was in bed.
