The chancellor Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon met on the night of January 9 with the Secretary of State of the United States, Anthony Blinkenand the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Melanie Joly, to sign theDeclaration of the North American Alliance for Racial Inclusion and Equality”in addition to offering a trilateral message.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) pointed out that “the three countries are thinking about something similar in our domestic policy and it is a great opportunity because we do not have to convince anyone of what we have to do.”

He indicated that in the case of Mexico “racism is extremely relevant and for a long time there was no talk of racism [pese a que] It is a very current issue and it is a problem that synthesizes social, gender and other inequalities, and much has been done to dismantle the culture of racism”.

The foreign minister added that racism is closely related to gender and social inequality, among others, in addition to the fact that it is a subject that, despite being very important, is little reviewed in the country’s schools.

For her part, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that: “This is our project on diversity, equality and inclusion in our societies. All people deserve equal opportunities regardless of religion, gender or sexual orientation.

He said that as leaders those of Canada, United States and Mexico They have “a great responsibility to combat discrimination and hate in all its forms, today we committed to them by signing the declaration.”

Blinken said each of the three nations “recognizes a responsibility to work with fierce urgency on such issues to break down these barriers and end prejudice”.

In addition, he recalled that on his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed an executive order regarding the advancement of the racial equity and support for underserved communities through the federal government.

He said that “it is the will of the three countries is important in recognizing that there is still a lot of work to be done to eradicate discrimination and inequality in each of our countries, which shows that we ask the same of ourselves as of other countries”.

As such, he said that “everyone is better off” when Canadians, Americans and Mexicans enjoy the same rights and equal opportunities, as it also reflects a “fundamental recognition” that every nation can reach its full potential.

Previously, Ebrard considered that the side-by-side meeting between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and his United States counterpart, Joe Biden, had been “the most productive and cordial between the two leaders.”

“Concluding the bilateral meeting, splendid conversation. Among those that I have witnessed, without a doubt, today’s is by far the most productive and cordial between presidents Biden and López Obrador”, Ebrard pointed out on social networks.

The two presidents, together with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, will participate this Tuesday in the trilateral meeting, in which they are expected to talk about issues related to migration, energy and drug trafficking, and the Wednesday, Trudeau will hold a bilateral meeting with López Obrador.

The last time Biden, López Obrador and Trudeau met was in November 2021 at the White House. Under the presidency of Donald Trump (2017-2021), no summit was held between the leaders of the three countries.
