MIAMI.- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis once again expressed his opposition to Amendment 3, which seeks to legalize recreational marijuana in the state, arguing that this constitutional reform could have negative consequences, especially for children and women. families.
One of DeSantis’ main points of criticism is the possibility that legalization would allow marijuana use near schools.
At an event held in Hialeah Gardens, the governor questioned whether it would be acceptable for people to smoke marijuana near elementary schools, noting that this would not be “beneficial for the state.”
Although proponents of the amendment say the Legislature would have the power to regulate where and when marijuana can be consumed, similar to existing restrictions on tobacco, DeSantis was skeptical.
In his opinion, the amendment, in its current context, is “too broad” and could lead to widespread marijuana use in public places.
Support for the amendment
DeSantis also criticized the financial support the amendment is receiving from companies within the marijuana industry.
He believed that these companies would be motivated by profit and not by the well-being of Floridians. “They are going to get rich, much richer.”
According to the Tallahassee owner, the donation of millions of dollars to the campaign to legalize weed is a clear indication of the commercial interests at stake.
“People are not investing tens of millions of dollars in this out of the goodness of their hearts,” DeSantis said. “They are going to make a lot of money if that amendment is approved.”
DeSantis presented himself as an advocate for families and communities. From his perspective, marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level and legalizing it at the state level could send the wrong message.
If 60% of registered voters in Florida approve the measure, Amendment 3 would take effect six months after the November elections.
