Nintendo and Illumination had fun creating a site showcasing Mario and Luigi’s plumbing business. A gold mine of small references.
Nintendo had created a small controversy by breaking a myth in 2017: Mario, the most famous of its mascots, would have swapped his career as a plumber for that of a great sportsman. It was written on the official description of the character, before the Japanese firm changed its mind a few months later by reaffirming that Mario is indeed a plumber. Thanks to a promotional campaign in the colors of the upcoming animated film, we have additional confirmation of the real job of the hero.
On the occasion of the Super Bowl, the final of the NFL championship very followed on February 12, 2023, Nintendo and Illumination created a fake advertising spot on Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, the plumbing company run by Mario and his brother Luigi. Very funny, the sequence, whose music refers to an old rap song from the series Super Mario Bros. SMBplumbing.com is mostly full of tasty little easter eggs:
- You can see a “Certified Super!” ”, the word “Super” referring to the name of the video games. When clicked, a well-known fan sound plays (the sound of picking up a mushroom to make it bigger).
- When you click on the “As seen on TV!” “, the starting music of a Mario Kart race starts (we also see karts in the last trailer of the film).
- Customer ratings are stars (and stars are extremely important in video games).
- The slogan “Fixing pipes is our hobby!” refers to the pipes that can be crossed in video games (pipes = pipes).
- The two brothers need to recruit an accountant to manage their bank account. They use the word “coins” rather than “money” to refer to money. In video games, you keep collecting coins.
Note that the site mentions a telephone number — 929-55-MARIO — that you can call or send a message to. According a Polygon article published on February 12he would hear the voice of Charlie Day (who plays Luigi in the animated film).
