Massachusetts mother drowns after trying to save her son in New Hampshire

A hiking trip in the White Mountains turned into a tragedy for a Massachusetts family, when the family’s mother drowned after jumping into a body of water to save one of her children, according to the Department of Fish and Game. from New Hampshire.

On Tuesday, the family of five, along with a friend, planned to hike Franconia Falls in Lincoln. They got to the Lincoln Woods trailhead around 1 pm, and when they got to the falls, they got ready to swim. That’s when one of the boys fell into a pool of water at the falls, New Hampshire officials said, and the boy’s mother jumped into the river to save him from a swift current.

The mother also had trouble, and two other children jumped in to help; they were able to pull their brother out of the water, but another child was trapped between some rocks, according to Fish and Game officials.

Meanwhile, the father of the family was trying to find the mother, whom he eventually found on a rock, and started CPR on her. She could not be revived, authorities said.

He got to where his son was and took him to a safe place.

Crews arrived and took two of the injured hikers to the trailhead, where they were later transported to Littleton Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A funeral home vouched for the mother’s body.

Authorities have not released the name of the woman who died.
