Massport closes Logan Airport runway for repair project

A runway at Boston’s Logan International Airport will be closed for 100 days starting Monday while crews work to make safety improvements, according to the Massachusetts Port Authority.

The runway 15R-33L pavement and safety rehabilitation project will be completed in several phases and will include new pavement, upgraded electrical equipment and switching runway lighting to LED, according to Massport.

The track will be closed throughout the project. The last time this track was rehabilitated was in 2012.

This particular runway is used by the Federal Aviation Administration in the midst of northwesterly winds, and is also preferred during night flights over the harbor “for noise reduction purposes.”

Massport said it is implementing several measures to reduce construction noise during the project, including maximizing daytime work and banning trucks from driving on Boston streets to and from Logan.

The project is also expected to implement improvements to taxiway intersections designed to reduce the risk of runway incursions, Massport added.
