After the resignation of the mayor of Saint-Brevin, elected officials demand emergency measures
Last week, the mayor of this commune of Loire-Atlantique announced his resignation after being targeted by arson. The resigning elected official had regretted in a press release published on his Facebook page that the State had not “not held by (his) side”.
Tensions around a project to welcome asylum seekers
Saint-Brevin-les-Pins has been, for several months, the center of tensions following a project to move near an elementary school the reception center for asylum seekers (Cada) which had opened in the seaside resort in 2016 after the dismantling of the “Calais Jungle”.
Several demonstrations against this project were organized there at the call of the extreme right, in particular of the movement of Reconquest, the party of Eric Zemmour. Bernard Germain, a Reconquest candidate for the 2022 legislative elections in Côtes-d’Armor, was among the speakers at the latest event, at the end of April.
Emmanuel Macron denounces “unworthy attacks” against the resigning mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins
Bernard Germain was the spokesperson for a committee hostile to a project for a reception center for refugees in a regular situation in Callac (Côtes-d’Armor). Faced with pressure from the far right and tensions in the town, the municipality of Callac had finally given up this project in January, carried by a private foundation, unlike Saint-Brevin where the contested project is carried by the State.
Asked by AFP at the end of March, the mayor of Saint-Brevin recalled that a total of 400 asylum seekers have been received in the town since the opening of the Cada seven years ago. And, he pointed out, “there was never the slightest problem”.
